Responsible Dog Ownership Day
Owning a dog can be incredibly rewarding, but it also comes with a big amount of responsibility to take care of them. When we bring a dog into our lives, we are making a commitment to care for their physical health, emotional well-being, safety, and everyday needs throughout their lifetime which dogs typically live between 10-13 years (if not longer!) There are little steps you can take everyday to provide your dog with a safe, healthy, happy, and fulfilling life.
What does responsible dog ownership look like?
Providing healthy, nutritious food
Providing access to fresh water
Keeping up with routine vet care with annual exams, vaccines, and flea/tick prevention
Providing identification for your dog by having a collar/tag and a microchip
Providing opportunities to explore, play, learn, and exercise (Some dogs are naturally more active so the amount of exercise needed can vary based on your dogs individual needs)
Providing regular grooming, dental care, nail trims (How often this is needed can vary on your dogs breed)
Training/socialization of your dog
Paying attention to any changes in their behavior or health
Providing patience, companionship, and plenty of love!
Every dog has different needs, and responsible ownership does not always look exactly the same from one household to another. What matters is making thoughtful choices that help keep your dog healthy, safe, comfortable, and happy based on their individual needs.
At Maine Animal Health Alliance, we are proud to support Maine pet owners in caring for their animals and maintaining the lifelong bond they share. To all of the dog parents out there: thank you for everything you do for your dogs everyday! Your dogs may not be able to say it themselves, but we know they appreciate everything you do for them each and everyday!
